Reading & Phonics

At St. Andrew’s we support children to become successful, fluent readers by the end of Year 2. We are passionate about teaching children to read and write independently, as quickly as possible. These fundamental skills not only hold the keys to the rest of the curriculum, but also have a huge impact on children’s self-esteem and future possibilities.

Rocket Phonics is a next generation phonics programme for early years which is a combination of high quality, synthetic, systematic and discrete teaching which we combine with a whole language approach that promotes reading for pleasure.

To complement in-class learning we have a Reading Passport [link to Reading Passport page] for each year group to further their skills and foster a love of reading.

Below are links to a phonics overview and a selection of phonics videos to explain the programme and further resources can be found under Reading & Phonics Resources to support parents/ carers in helping their children at home.
