Racial Equality

St. Andrew's is committed to fostering an inclusive environment based on respect for, and celebration of cultural and ethnic diversity. We believe diversity allows our children and staff to experience different perspectives and beliefs, enriching their lives.

Cultural and ethnic diversity is valued across the entire curriculum, in the school workforce, the governing body, the parental body and the student body. We embrace our rich cultural heritage through food, music, art and faith and celebrate cultural holidays and festivals throughout the school year. The school has also adopted a Diverse Book List
to encourage children, parents and carers to expand the diversity of their children’s literature.

St Andrew’s is committed to an inclusive ethos based on respect for, and celebration of, ethnic diversity. The school strives to prepare all pupils for living in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic society.  To do this we are following the lead of Brighton and Hove City Council, in particular the seven change areas of their Anti-racist education strategy:

  • BAME staff & governor recruitment and retention
  • Responding to incidents and issues
  • BAME child, pupil, parent and carer support
  • Training for staff and governors
  • Racial literacy for children pupils
  • Diversifying and decolonising the curriculum
  • Setting and school values and policies

On this page you will find information about our work in this area

  • Periodic updates on our progress against the BHCC Anti-racist school strategy
  • St Andrew's anti-racism parent and carer working group known as the Multicultural Society. This group meets with senior school leadership and governors once a term to discuss progress and identify issues.

The school Multicultural Society meets termly and is working on a number of initiatives in 2023/24:
