Maths
Our primary focus is to support our children to become fluent in mathematical understanding from the most basic level so that they can build upon their own understanding.
At St. Andrew's we follow a maths mastery approach and aim to:
- promote curiosity and enable children to safely take risks and learn from first-hand experience.
- enable children to develop conceptual understanding, recall of number facts and patterns and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- promote their ability to reason through opportunities to discuss their thinking and understanding.
- encourage problem solving and solution finding.
What is teaching for mastery?
Achieving mastery means acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that has been taught to enable children to move on to more advanced materials. Mastering maths is where children acquire a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject.
The phrase ‘teaching for mastery’ describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give children the best chance of mastering maths. As part of our mastery approach to Maths we work with the Sussex Maths Hub.
